What's new in SpamPal v1.50?

SpamPal v1.50 is the latest release of SpamPal, the result of a series of beta-releases that started with v1.15 back in early January 2003. True techno-geeks can see all the changes by reading down the history page (when the list divides into two columns, read the right-hand one), but for the rest of us here's a quick summary of what's new...

Can protect IMAP4 mailboxes

IMAP4 options example

While previously you needed a POP3 mailbox to use SpamPal, now you can use it to protect an IMAP4 mailbox too! It works slightly differently to POP3, but you can choose exactly how you want it to operate.

SMTP support

SMTP options example

SpamPal can also now understand SMTP connections. (Broadly, SMTP is used to send email while POP3 and IMAP4 are used to receive it.) The most common use for this would be to automatically whitelist anyone you send email to - so their reply is never mistaken for spam. But you could also use it to filter spam messages if you use ODMR or have an SMTP server of your own...

Redesigned Options window

Options window example

The old SpamPal options window looked cheap, nasty, and geekish. The new one is clean, easy-to-understand and includes lots of explanations. I think you'll agree, the improvement is vast!

Enhanced Status window

Status window example

The status window has been enhanced with some useless statistics showing how much of your mail SpamPal things is spam.

Logging facility

Logfile example

One big compaint about previous versions of SpamPal was that you had to install a plugin to keep a check on what it was doing. No longer - SpamPal can now create a logfile of its activities, in as much or as little detail as you like! (The example above shows the maximum detail level.)

Plays better with VPOP3

Due to an inconsitant operation, sometimes when you were using VPOP3 with SpamPal, VPOP3 wouldn't notice that a SpamPal plugin had detected that a message was spam. While this problem isn't entirely cured, it is much rarer now!

Rewritten User Guide

We've thrown away the old manual and replaced it with a completely new one written by Steve Basford. Take a look!

And much more!

I could bore you with all the changes that have been made to SpamPal, to make it more efficient, to make it more usable, and suchlike, but to save sending anyone to sleep they can be summed up in three words: Faster, Leaner, Better!

Where can I get it?
